The only difference is that people with psychiatric orders break down more easily, or for reasons that those looking at them may not understand. However, I think we all recognize that many people break down under disaster or grief-stricken conditions, and almost anyone breaks down under torture. There's ultimately no difference between what a mentally ill person feels and what the general population feels - only how extreme the feeling is, and under what conditions it occurs.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03314260799819189129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287863348423077964.post-47211517107580957692013-02-19T09:33:57.750-08:002013-02-19T09:33:57.750-08:00Deb, you're a brave writer and an inspiring pe...Deb, you're a brave writer and an inspiring person. I realize your situation is different from mine, but I've been in plenty of situations like this. The idea of going to a conference with mobs of people, being innundated with more information than you can process, being completely out of your element and trying to seem sociable when all you want to do is hightail it to the safety of your home.....just thinking about it has me hyperventilating!

I worked customer service for about seven years and the whole concept of trying to act civilized or relaxed when all you wanted to do was scream and rip somebody's head off never set well with me. I agree that the average American simply thinks they can keep asking more of themselves forever, and so should everybody else.

But anyone with a serious chronic illness can tell you this is not so - and if we were talking about, say, a heart problem, people would accept that there are precautions and care to be taken. It is just that mental illness is simple not accepted as a 'health' problem - it is seen as some sort of imaginary problem you can get out of by 'positive thinking'. I'm still hoping that more enlightened times may come. This blog is hopefully one little drop in the bucket towards making it so.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03314260799819189129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287863348423077964.post-18774865974871123852010-07-12T23:42:24.265-07:002010-07-12T23:42:24.265-07:00What I've found is that almost no person in my...What I've found is that almost no person in my life but you has so far accepted any talk of any limitation at any time. This is the saddest, to me: when someone will not even reach out for the help that IS available now. Once upon a time there was no help at all, so it's heartbreaking that some people won't even use what help there is.

One of the hardest things for some people to do is admit to themselves that they are mentally ill. Not everyone can do it. The sad truth is that your brother will probably have to face some harsh situations before he is ready to concede that he needs help. I feel for you, and I applaud your willingness to be open to any progress he might make later on.

The book should be out in a matter of weeks; I'll be sure and post the link on Amazon. Check back in late June or early May. I wish I had more to offer you...

DeborahAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03314260799819189129noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287863348423077964.post-38049904149108358812010-06-06T16:13:39.770-07:002010-06-06T16:13:39.770-07:00My brother was diagnosed 20 years ago with bipolar...My brother was diagnosed 20 years ago with bipolar disorder. He has gone through many stages of acceptance and denial. He refuses to allow anyone to talk to him about mental illness at all and has physically bullied my 80 year old father who is totally supporting him. I am relieved to find a person who is discussing this issue so outwardly. I do not feel that I have the qualifications or the skill to help my brother find financial stability, and fear that he will become homeless once my father passes away. It is a dark well for all of us. I search for a gentle way to approach him, and pray for that source of inspiration for him to turn his life into the best life he has now. I look forward to your self-help book being published.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7287863348423077964.post-51753551809086760942010-05-23T10:56:22.462-07:002010-05-23T10:56:22.462-07:00Laura,
